Abstract:

"Do what I do" or "Do what you wish, as long as you are happy"? Many interventions relate to actions whose consequences could, alternatively, be learned. We ask: Are decisions more respected if the decision-maker knows well what they are doing or are interventions primarily about the annihilation of choices seen as unacceptable? A simple model of stochastic choice allows the characterization of interventions as safeguards or impositions. We present an experimental and econometric design that seeks to disentangle these two motivations in varying contexts, potentially explaining baseline levels of intervention across choice environments.
